Jane's Story

Jane's Story

"With your help, I know I can shine again."

A Difficult Start

Meet Jane. Jane has bipolar disorder and PTSD, which have shaped much of her adult life. Throughout her 20s, she struggled with a series of unstable jobs, and in 2020, she faced a significant low point when she was hospitalized following a suicide attempt. Despite these challenges, Jane demonstrated resilience. She managed to bounce back, finding work and settling into a long-term relationship with her partner.

Facing Eviction

By May 2023, Jane’s circumstances had drastically changed. She and her partner had been evicted from their home after both lost their jobs due to Jane’s declining mental health. With nowhere else to turn, the couple ended up living in a Travelodge in Wheatley.

Jane felt deeply let down by mental health services. However, when she met her key worker through Response, she felt an immediate connection, saying:

"With your help, I know I can shine again."

A Fresh Start at Settled Oxfordshire

In July 2023, Jane was offered a place at Settled Oxfordshire, marking a turning point in her journey. With the immediate threat of homelessness behind her, Jane was able to focus on her recovery.

The supportive environment at Settled Oxfordshire allowed Jane to identify and manage her mental health triggers. Importantly, the flexible pet policy enabled her to adopt Blaze, a support cat who became a calming and therapeutic presence in her life.

Accessing Support and Improving Wellbeing

Jane also struggled to access the psychological support she needed through the NHS. Recognizing this gap, her key worker applied for a grant from Greater Change to fund private therapy. This grant allowed Jane to choose her own therapist, helping her to feel more in control of her recovery.

Her physical health improved as well. After registering with a new GP, Jane received vouchers for Slimming World. With the encouragement of her key worker, she lost 3.5 stone, further boosting her confidence.

Reflecting on her experience, Jane shared:

"Response really got me a life. The support and the grant have changed everything. I’m so grateful."

Looking Ahead

With renewed hope for the future, Jane is focused on building her confidence and setting new goals. She has begun going to the gym and recently explored the local gym discount scheme.

Jane is also pursuing her dream of becoming a florist. She is looking into floristry courses with a long-term goal of running her own shop.

A Message of Hope

Jane’s story is one of perseverance and transformation. Thanks to the support of Response and Settled Oxfordshire, she is building a brighter future, proving that even in the face of immense challenges, a new beginning is possible.
